Working for Happy Trails is one the most rewarding jobs you will ever have. We have a limited number of openings remaining for the 2010 session in July. Here are answers to some of the more frequently asked questions we receive from potential applicants.
What is Happy Trails for Kids? Who does summer camp serve?
Happy Trails for Kids is a non-profit organization that aims to provide stability, self-esteem and a sense of community to children in the California foster care system. By offering adventurous overnight activities supplemented by year-round reunion events, Happy Trails strives to be a consistent and enriching influence on the lives of a vulnerable and overlooked segment of the youth population. Happy Trails serves youth ages 7 – 13 years old.
When is Summer Camp?
Happy Trails Camp is scheduled for Monday, July 5 - Sunday, July 11, 2010.
Where is camp?
Happy Trails is located near Idyllwild. The camp meets the rigorous standards required for accreditation by the American Camp Association.
Who can apply to be a Camp Counselor?
Applicants must be at least 19 years of age. Former or current foster youth are strongly encouraged to apply.
What the qualifications for Camp Counselors?
Qualifications include: desire, commitment, and ability to work with children outdoors; experience working with children ages 7-13 years; adaptability, integrity, patience and enthusiasm are required; and ability to work well in close proximity with others.
How can I apply for the Camp Counselor position?
Please complete the Happy Trails for Kids application and submit to Nav Deol-Johnson, Camp Director, by Friday, May 14, 2010. Applications can be submitted via email to nav@happytrailsforkids.org or faxed to 1-866-390-5925. If selected, candidates must complete an in-person interview on Saturday, May 22 or Sunday, May 23, 2010.
What are the requirements for the Camp Counselor position?
In addition to an in-person interview and reference checks, all Camp Counselors must complete a criminal records background check and tuberculosis (TB) test (paid by Happy Trails). Counselors must also attend two mandatory training sessions on June 12 and June 19, 2010. Counselors must be available the entire week of summer camp (July 5 -11, 2010).
What is the camper to staff ratio?
At Happy Trails we maintain a low overall staff-to-camper ratio of approximately 1 adult to every 3 campers. There are no more than 10 campers per cabin with 3 adult counselors.
What is the daily schedule like?
The camp schedule is organized to allow campers the maximum amount of time to participate in camp program activities. Campers typically wake-up at 7 a.m. and are scheduled to have lights out by 9:30 p.m.
What are the camp activities at Happy Trails?
Camp activities are age appropriate and campers are typically separated into age groups (7-10 years and 11-13 years old). Camp activities include swimming, canoeing, hiking, arts & crafts, horseback riding, campfire sessions, climbing and low ropes course, dance classes, organized sports, and much more.
Will we be leaving the camp at any time?
No, we will not be leaving camp at any time during the week.
What are the sleeping arrangements?
Campers are separated by age and gender and assigned to cabins. Each cabin has bunk beds, storage closets and indoor bathrooms and showers. No more than 10 campers are housed with 3 adult counselors of the same gender.
What are the meals like at camp?
They’re good! At Happy Trails we serve nutritious, well-balanced meals that aim to keep campers and staff alike well fed, energetic and happy!
