The Janet & Sonny Salter Scholarship Fund

Our 2020 scholarship was awarded to Florencia Valenzuela. Flo started her journey with Happy Trails as a camper, and later becoming a beloved camp counselor. She is a senior at UCLA majoring in Sociology. Flo describes Happy Trails Camp as “changing my life forever”. And the cycle of change continues…. the impact Flo has had in transforming the lives of children is immeasurable. We are grateful for Flo’s ongoing commitment to Happy Trails and admire her academic achievements.

The Janet & Max “Sonny” Salter Scholarship Fund

In addition to camp and year-round programming, Happy Trails for Kids offers college-bound campers and counselors financial aid through the Sonny Salter Fund. This scholarship was named to honor Maxwell Hillary Salter, who along with his wife Janet and daughter Pepper, were instrumental in founding Happy Trails for Kids. Max "Sonny" Salter was a man of great integrity, generosity and humor. Although he grew up with very little, Max became a successful businessman and served as the Mayor of Beverly Hills.

Even though Max and Janet are no longer with us, their legacy continues to support camp through their foundation. Max and Janet wanted every child at Happy Trails to feel special and know that they matter.
